Starting up a YouTube channel is intimidating these days, considering there are millions of creators who are already uploading. Most successful channels today started with zero subscribers and a smartphone, but with a little focus and consistency, you can develop your area in YouTube. Here, I will give you tried and tested techniques to develop and build a successful channel from scratch.
Clearly Define Your Niche and Audience
The first step to get started is clarity. You need to clarify exactly what topic or niche you are passionate about, and who your new audience/potential subscribers are. Defining a clear niche sets you apart, clarifies the value you offer, and makes it easier to reach the right audience. You will need to research your potential audience and their needs, problems and questions, and then create videos based on this research.
Build High Quality Videos and Consistent Content
High quality videos do not always mean expensive cameras! At a minimum you need to have visual clarity, proper audio, and smooth and logical flows of content. Take advantage of free or low-cost tools to enhance your video during editing. Being consistent does not mean the same content. You should create content on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, in order to give your audience a common time-frame when they can expect new content from you. Building an expectation of consistency also builds trust and loyalty over time!
Optimize for Search and Discovery
We all know that YouTube ranks second highest as the largest search engine in the whole world. Use rich keywords in your titles, descriptive allusions in your descriptions, and accurate tags to up your chances of appearing in search results! Use your thumbnails to grab a user’s attention quickly by showing the value of your video upfront (without deceiving them), and include closed captions and playlists to increase chances of discovery.
Engage and Build Community
Growing on YouTube is about forming relationships, not views! Ask people to like, comment, and subscribe! Show your authenticity in your responses to help build community, and show your audience their comments matter! You could even consider finishing your video with a question or a call-to-action to help provide the most opportunities for engagement and to help keep further conversations going.
Analyze, Adapt, and Improve
YouTube Analytics is an amazing tool! They show you your total watch time, your audience demographics and geography, plus users’ behaviors! Use the data you’ve received to develop your content strategy! Look for videos that have more views and good retention and try to duplicate successful aspects of those videos!
Promote Beyond Youtube
Don’t depend only on YouTube’s algorithm to receive viewers. Get the word out by sharing your videos on social media and embedding on your website or blog, and collaborate with other creators in complementary niches. Cross-promoting introduces your channel to new viewers and establishes credibility much more than working alone.
Continue Learning and Adapting
As trends, algorithms, and expectations change daily, keep learning from industry influencers, see how successful channels are changing, and adapt to your experience. Being adaptable helps your content stay relevant and ahead of the competition.
